Power/Energy Control Switch (PCS)

What is a power/energy control switch?

The power/energy control switch is one of the elements of the electricity control display and protection. It is normally found at the entrance of the house or business place.

What is it used for?

This element controls that the power demanded by a certain supply (it is determined by the number of electrical appliances that are operating at the same time, such as electrical appliances, house lightning, computers, TVs,...) do not exceed the contract power by this end user. When this happens, the control switch is automatically activated and the supply is cut off.

Why do I have to install it?

The Royal Decree 1454/2005, that modifies several disposals related to the electricity industry, and the ITC Order 1857/2008, that revises electricity tariffs through July 1st of 2008, establish that any electrical installation should obligatory have installed a PCS.

What happens if I do not install the PCS?

According to the Additional Disposal Nº 1 of the aforementioned ITC Order 1857/2008, the invoicing of your contract power will be increased by a surcharge.

“1. Supply Tariffs Contracts:

Tariffs 1.0, 2.0.1 y 2.0.2 with or without hourly discrimination: Will apply tariff 2.0.3 with or without hourly discrimination, depends on where the supply have it or not, and a contract power of 10 kW.

Tariffs 2.0.3 y 3.0.1 with or without hourly discrimination: Will apply tariff 3.0.1 with or without hourly discrimination, depends on where the supply have it or not, and a contract power of 20 kW.

2. Third Party Tariffs Contracts:

Tariffs 2.0A y 2.0.DHA: Will apply a contract power of 20 kW.

Since the date that the PCS has been installed and according to the normative in force, the invoice will be made according to the corresponding tariff and power”.

Who can install it?

The acquisition and installation of the PCS can be made just by yourself, using an authorized installer, or by the distribution company, which will charge a rental fee according to the rental prices in force at that moment.

In both cases, previous to the installation of the PCS, you should have your electrical installation properly adapted.
